UPDATE: AIG shares slip, Athenahealth sinks after hours

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- American International Group Inc. declined in the extended session Monday after the insurer reported a decline in operating income in the first quarter.

AIG (AIG)shares declined 2% to $51.67 on moderate volume after the insurer posted first-quarter earnings of $1.09 a share, or $1.21 a share adjusted. Analysts surveyed by FactSet expected $1.06 a share.

Total after-tax operating income for AIG also declined with lower income from the property and casualty business.

Shares of Athenahealth Inc. (ATHN) dropped more than 12% to $111 on moderate volume after Greenlight Capital's David Einhorn called the cloud-based health-care business services company a bubble stock and explained his short position at the Ira Sohn investment conference in New York.

Althenahealth currently has about 16%, or about 6 million, of its outstanding shares shorted. As recently as mid-February, about 8.8 million shares were shorted as the stock was powering up to its closing high of $204.41 on March 4.

Other after-hours stock movers related to the conference included companies that got positive remarks from Daruma Capital Management's Mariko Gordon. Shares of Pacira Pharmaceuticals Inc. (PCRX) rose 4.6% to $76.50 on light volume, while shares of H.B. Fuller Co. (FUL) advanced 1.2% to $47.20, and shares of Electronics for Imaging Inc. (EFII) rose 1.5% to $39.07.

Tableau Software Inc. (DATA) shares rose 9.2% to $63.35 on heavy volume after the company reported a first-quarter adjusted loss of 1 cents a share on revenue of $74.6 million. Analysts expected a loss of 11 cents a share on revenue of $63.1 million.

Anadarko Petroleum Corp. (APC) shares rose 1.6% to $101.09 after the company reported adjusted first-quarter earnings of $1.26 a share on revenue of $5.84 billion.
